HAM’s southern hall is filled by a three-dimensional painting based on over a thousand metres of cloth tied into knots. The mountain of cloth falling into folds from the ceiling and spreading across the floor was painted by the artist on-site. The dozens of over- and interlapping tones form a vast painting that visitors can step into. With each step, the piece shows a different side of itself. The physical experience of the painting is affected by the observer’s own movement, changes in perspective and the presence of other people in the same space.Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Schweiz

Pitting utopian ideologies against dystopian ruins, repression against expression, the local against the global, Garaicoa’s investigation of the urban environment is built on dualities.Museum at Eldridge Street, New York

In addition to sculpture, Smith works in a variety of other media, notably drawing, etching and lithography; but also in the mediums of artists' books, photography, video and more recently tapestry.Daimler Art Collection, Daimler Contemporary Berlin

The Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig is staging an artistic dialogue between the works of the Turkish artist Ayşe Erkmen and the Palestinian-British artist Mona Hatoum. The exhibition is the first joint project between these two internationally acclaimed female artists. The central theme of the exhibition is “displacement” – a state in which familiar things suddenly become foreign as a result of relocation, shifting or even uprooting. Both artists regard location and historic context as an integral part of their artistic reflection. In their own way, each examines issues of identity, self-determination, control, power and domination.Kino International Beriln

Forests and trees – mighty oaks on broad clearings and lush green in hidden corners – are among the frequently depicted motifs in paintings dating from the first half of the 19th century. In the Romantic era the German forest became a symbol of national identity and self-confidence, and at the same time a focus of artistic reflection. Another related topic is hunting, which in that period was a means of expressing social and princely prestige.Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, Italy

The exhibition incorporates several narratives: It tells about the city where people live and reside, about tall buildings founded on power and political ideologies, and about ruins of former greatness or buildings that were never completed. The beauty and contrasts of the urban landscape – its political as well as its poetic aspects – form a major theme in the oeuvre of Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa.Ludwig Forum Aachen

Yorgos Sapountzis’ installation for Galerie Barbara Gross will invite you to sit at a large round dinner table. Instead of fancy food servings, he will have dished up the remains of a performance he did last year in Bristol: Between shreds of fabric and sheets of aluminum, plaster casts of sculptures in Bristol’s public space will pair up with sealed jars of pickled vegetables. The Patina Paintings, called Gebrauchsbilder in German [the term implies both that the canvases are consumer objects and that they fulfil a need] are created in the locations where they are hung.Museum Folkwang, Essen
Ever since its invention 175 years ago artists have consistently questioned the nature of photography. Today artists acutely aware of the omnipresence of photographic images produce works exploring numerous aspects of photography: its materiality, its popularism, its psychological impact, its claims to objectivity, and its force in mass media. Against a familiar backdrop of the accelerating disappearance of analog photography and the simultaneously triumphal progress of digital photography, these works explore new ways of re-picturing and inhabiting that history.Pinakothek der Moderne, München

Yorgos Sapountzis engages both public and private spaces without recognizing any ontological difference between them. Focusing on the way in which people live in and share public spaces, Sapountzis is conscious of how these spaces affect the architectural and social structure of the city, as well as the ways in which individuals construct their identities.Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
MuralArtsProgram, Philadelphia

Working within a feminist and queer framework, Shah confronts, often in explicit detail, sex, sexuality, gender, the body, nature and the intersections between art, ecology and healing. Focusing on Lassnig’s self-portraiture, the exhibition presents works by the artist—most of them never previously exhibited in the U.S.—from all creative periods of her career, spanning her early involvement with graphic abstraction in Paris and Art Informel, to her later shift to figural representation. The show will be the most significant survey of her work ever presented in the United States, featuring approximately 50 paintings drawn from public and private collections and the artist herself, as well as a selection of watercolors and filmic works.International Centre Of Graphic Arts
he figurative art of Nancy Spero (1926–2009, American artist, activist and pioneer of feminist art, is clearly and concisely defined by the reality of political violence. The exhibition, featuring the prints from the MGLC Collection, provides an insight into a fragment of her work from the eighties to the beginning of the new millennium. The artist expressed herself through the use of experimental and ephemeral printmaking techniques. Her complex works establish a relationship between the image of the body, the societal context and the collective identity, exploring the historical role and position of women, whilst tying war, violence, victims as well as the ecstatic celebration of the cycle of life into a timeless chronicle. The art of Nancy Spero challenges the dogmatic, it is the antithesis of the hierarchical and calls for a balanced society.Heidelberger Kunstverein

"If you missed German artist Katharina Grosse’s "Wunderblock" exhibit, you missed "the classiest acid trip you can take," as Dallas Observer art critic Jamie Laughlin described it. Not the first artist who comes to mind for a show inside Renzo Piano’s beautiful Nasher—but the risk paid off. "In the end, Grosse didn’t spoil the travertine. Instead, her piece includes an elongated sculptural form that transcends from the interior of Piano’s light-filled galleries out into the garden," writes D Magazine blogger Peter Simek."ACCA, Melbourne Australia

The aim of this exhibition is to examine biographical forms in modern art. The exhibition looks at the constructive model of biography, as it has been applied to artistic activity, that uses documentary or fictitious elements; it is also an analysis of the experimental forms adopted by the question of the biographical subject, especially starting in the 1950s, with the expansion in art of the autobiography as an individual mythology.Haus der Kunst, München

"Just Two of Us" is Katharina Grosse's first public installation in New York. The work consists of eighteen large-scale glass fiber coated pieces and blurs the fixed boundaries between sculpture, painting and architectural space. The colorfully sprayed pieces of the installation intersect with the wooded area in the middle of the Commons and turn the plaza into a sculptural landscape punctuated by bursts of color. It might call to mind enormous pieces of technicolor firewood or meteors that have fallen from the sky, but mainly it triggers a thinking on public space as such.Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle, Belgium
The Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (°1919, Austria) is without doubt one of the most important female artists of the last hundred years. The re- cent honouring of her work with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale testifies to this fact. It was however not until the last fifteen years that the interest and recognition for the work of Lassnig grew exponenti- ally. The exhibition at the museum Dhondt-Dhaenens is in this respect the first individual museum presentation of Maria Lassnig in Belgium. It was realized in cooperation with the Neue Galerie Graz / Universal- museum Joanneum and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg.Modern One (Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art)
